Privacy and cookies

What we collect, why we have it, how long we keep it, and how to make us delete it.

SwitchScout sets no cookies. There is no analytics, no advertising pixel and no tracking script. The only thing this site stores on your device is your light or dark theme choice, and only if you use the toggle. You can read every page here without giving us anything at all — we hold personal data only if you choose to subscribe to email alerts.

Who is responsible

SwitchScout is operated by an individual in the United Kingdom, who is the data controller for personal data collected through this site. Full registered contact details are being finalised and will be published here. In the meantime, the fastest way to remove everything we hold about you is the unsubscribe link in any email we have sent you — it deletes your record immediately and needs no reply from us.

What we collect, and only if you subscribe

Browsing the site collects nothing beyond the standard server logs described below. If you sign up for rate alerts we store four things:

  • Your email address.
  • The accounts you asked us to watch, so we can tell you when one of them changes.
  • The date you signed up.
  • A random token that makes your unsubscribe link work without a password.

We do not ask for your name, your address, how much you have saved or who you bank with, and there is nowhere on this site to tell us.

Like any website, the servers that deliver these pages keep short-lived request logs that include IP addresses. We do not use them to build a profile of you.

Why we are allowed to hold it

We rely on your consent, given when you enter your email address and ask for alerts. You can withdraw it at any time using the unsubscribe link in any email we send. Withdrawing does not make our earlier use of your address unlawful, but it stops all further use immediately.

Cookies

We do not set any cookies — not for analytics, not for advertising, not for preferences. Nothing on this site writes to your browser’s cookie jar, and we load no third-party scripts, so no other company is watching you here either.

There is one exception worth naming rather than glossing over. If you switch between the light and dark theme, your choice is saved in your browser’s local storage under rr-theme so the site does not forget it on the next page. It holds a single word, it contains no identifier and nothing that could single you out, it is written only when you click the toggle, and it never leaves your device — we cannot read it. Clearing your browser storage removes it.

That is why you have not been asked to accept anything: there is nothing here to consent to beyond a setting you chose yourself.

If that changes — the most likely reason being affiliate links, which usually rely on tracking cookies — we will ask for your consent before anything is stored, and this section will say exactly what is set and why. We will not turn tracking on quietly and describe it here afterwards.

Who else handles it

We use a small number of service providers to run the site. They act on our instructions and do not have permission to use your data for their own purposes.

ProviderWhat forWhat reaches them
VercelHosting the site and serving pagesStandard server request logs, which include IP addresses
Global edge network, including outside the UK
UpstashStoring the subscriber listYour email address, the accounts you track, and your signup date
May be processed outside the UK
ResendDelivering alert emailsYour email address and the contents of emails sent to you
Outside the UK

Some of these providers operate outside the United Kingdom, so your email address may be processed abroad. We do not sell your data, and we do not share it with the banks and building societies whose rates we publish.

How long we keep it

Until you tell us to stop. Clicking unsubscribe deletes your record straight away rather than flagging it as inactive — there is no suppression list holding your address afterwards.

One honest caveat: deleting your record here does not reach back into our email provider’s own delivery logs, which record that a message was sent to you and expire on their schedule, not ours.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you can ask us for a copy of what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it, object to how we use it, ask us to restrict its use, or ask for it in a portable form. You can also withdraw consent at any time.

Because we hold so little, most of these are quick: unsubscribing achieves deletion instantly, and what we hold is the short list above.

If you think we have got something wrong, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk. We would rather you told us first so we can fix it.

Contact

A published address for data-protection requests is being set up. Until it is here, replying to any email we have sent you reaches us, and the unsubscribe link in that email deletes your record immediately without needing us at all.

Changes

This notice describes what the site does today. If we start collecting something new, setting cookies, or adding a provider, we will update this page at the same time as the change ships, not after it.
